First Step To The Stars
The first scientific workshop organized by our team aimed to give students participating in the TESS-UA-2022 project experience of presenting at a scientific conference and to introduce more experienced scientists to their findings.
December 2022 – February 2023
Topics of the workshop: variable stars and asteroids.
Project figures:
10 participants
5 reports, including 3 from students of our scientific project.
Q&A
Did you publish the speakers' abstracts in any of the journals after the workshop?
Unfortunately, no. Due to the small number of participants, it was not possible to publish the abstracts, as this number is too small to form a full-fledged journal.
Do you hold such conferences regularly?
Yes, because such conferences are part of the TESS-UA scientific projects. This is what makes the training comprehensive and quite intense.
Results of the project:
Initially, our team planned to hold a regular international online scientific conference, albeit with a small number of participants. However, as the TESS-UA-2022 project began in parallel with the preparations for the conference, we decided to link this event to it.
We also invited five foreign scientists to participate in this conference, who, having previously agreed to join, declined to participate just before the registration . So, unfortunately, our international conference turned into a small Ukrainian workshop.
However, despite the scientists' refusals, the somewhat insufficient preparation of TESS-UA-2022 students for their presentations, and our initial doubts about the success of this workshop, it turned out to be surprisingly fruitful. The participants' reports proved to be quite good, and they learned a lot about methods of asteroid research, met several astronomers, and learned about research in other fields. We took into account all the mistakes made during the planning and organization of this workshop to prepare for the next conference, CATS-2023.
